TAN KAH KEE YOUNG INVENTORS' AWARD - SHANGHAI

A GRAND PRIZE PRESENTATION CEREMONY

The first Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Award (Shanghai) was held at Shanghai University on 14th January, 2003. Among the guests and leaders present were Professor Phua Kok Khoo, Vice-Chairman of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation, Singapore; Mr Li Mingjun, Deputy Chief of Shanghai Science Commission; Assistant Professor Jiang Hong, Chief of the Science and Research Department, Shanghai Education Commission; Mr Yin Bangqi, Deputy Chief of Shanghai Science & Technology Incentive Management Office; Professor Fang Minglun, Party Secretary cum Vice-President of General Affairs, Shanghai University; and Professor Cao Jialin, Vice-President of Shanghai University, who is also the Chairman of Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Award Committee, Shanghai. Also present were the chiefs of the science and research departments of 14 tertiary institutions, such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Tongji University and Shanghai University as well as student representatives. The event saw a turnout of more than 300.

The prize presentation ceremony was chaired by Professor Zeng Wenbiao, Seceretary-General of Shanghai University. The ceremony started off with an address by Professor Cao Jialin, who made the speech on behalf of the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Award Committee, Shanghai, followed by the announcement of winners of the 2003 Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Award, Shanghai. The winners received their certificates and prizes from Professor Phua Kok Khoo, Secretary-General Fang Minglun, Deputy Chief Li Mingjun, Vice-President Cao Jialin as well as the panel of distinguished guests and leaders. Shanghai University's Chen Jia, Silver Award winner, then delivered a speech on behalf of all winners. Professor Phua Kok Khoo, Vice-Chairman, Tan Kah Kee Foundation, Singapore; and Mr Li Mingjun, Deputy Chief of Shanghai Science Commission also spoke at the event.

After the ceremony, guests and leaders toured the exhibition that showcased the winning entries of the 2003 Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Award, Shanghai.

The event was given comprehensive coverage by the media, such as Shanghai Wen Hui Bao, Shanghai Ke Ji Bao (Science and Technology News), Shanghai Education Television and Shanghai University Television.
